Discovering the Best Yoga Mat Materials for Your Practice
Share
Hey yogis!
Welcome to another Asana Essentials blog post! Today, we're diving into the wonderful world of yoga mat materials. It's so important to know what your mat is made of, not just for your practice but also for the environment. Let's explore the pros and cons of the main materials you'll find out there.
### Cork
Cork mats are fantastic for those home studio sessions. They offer a great grip and cushion, making every pose feel just right. However, they are on the heavier side and can be prone to cracking over time. The best part? Cork is recyclable and biodegradable, making it an eco-friendly choice.
### Natural Rubber
If you love a firm grip, natural rubber mats might be your best friend. Often combined with a PU (polyurethane) layer, these mats reduce the stickiness while providing excellent grip on the floor. They cushion well and are recyclable, although they can be quite heavy and the grip might be a bit too much for some. Perfect for a steady practice that keeps you grounded!
### TPE (Thermal Plastic Elastomer)
TPE mats are a top pick for many yogis. They're non-toxic, recyclable, and boast anti-bacterial properties thanks to closed fusion technology. These mats are anti-slip, cushion well and are incredibly long-lasting. Plus, they're light and portable, making them great for yogis on the go!
### PVC (Poly-Vinyl Chloride)
PVC mats are commonly found but come with a significant downside. They are not eco-friendly, contain phthalates (known endocrine disruptors), and are neither biodegradable nor recyclable. While they might offer a good grip and cushioning, their environmental impact and potential health risks are something to seriously consider.
As a yoga instructor dedicated to holistic wellness, I always encourage my Asana Essentials clients to opt for eco-friendly and non-toxic yoga mats. Not only are these better for the environment, but they also support your health and well-being. Remember, the material of your mat can impact your practice more than you might think!
Stay mindful of what supports you on your yoga journey!
Happy practicing
Namaste,
Andrea
