Building Your Practice: The Power of Yoga Sequences and Blocks
Share
Whether you're a seasoned yogi or just starting out, one of the most effective and empowering ways to deepen your practice is by learning and using yoga sequences—or what I like to call yoga blocks.
These blocks are thoughtfully grouped sets of postures that begin from a specific starting position and flow together with purpose. They're not just easier to remember than long individual pose lists—they also help target specific goals like flexibility, strength, balance, or focus.
Let’s explore why yoga sequences can be a powerful tool in your practice, and how they help you see real results—on and off the mat.
What Is a Yoga Sequence or Block?
A yoga block (not to be confused with the prop!) is a short series of poses that flow from one another, usually beginning and ending in the same base posture.
For example:
- **Seated Core Warm-Up Block** begins in cross-legged pose and flows through gentle core activations and twists.
- **Warrior Sequence** starts in Warrior I or II and moves through powerful standing postures to awaken strength and balance.
- **Core Strengthening Block** might begin and end in Staff Pose, with boat poses and leg lifts in between.
- **Cool Down Block** may include gentle forward folds and hip openers, all from a reclined position.
Each block is like a mini-ritual—anchored in a familiar starting point, yet filled with purposeful movement.
Why Use Yoga Sequences in Your Practice?
1. Easier to Remember
Memorizing a few key blocks is far simpler than trying to recall a dozen unrelated poses. Once you’ve got the flow in your body, it becomes second nature—like learning a dance.
2. Targeted Benefits
Blocks can be designed to support a specific goal: core strength, hip mobility, balance, or even emotional calm. Whether you need a morning energizer or an evening release, there’s a sequence for that.
3. Encourages Mindful Movement
When you know what’s coming next, you can let go of "what's next?" thinking and get immersed in the *feeling* of the movement. This is where yoga becomes more than exercise—it becomes meditation in motion.
4. Helps Build Consistency
Having a few go-to sequences in your back pocket makes it easier to commit to a daily or weekly practice. Even just 10 minutes of a familiar block can make a huge difference in how your body and mind feel.
5. Progress You Can Feel
Repetition of a sequence over time reveals progress—poses become easier, transitions smoother, breath deeper. Blocks help you *see* and *feel* your growth.
Where to Begin
Start with just a couple of blocks that suit your body and your goals. Here are a few ideas to try:
- **Sun Salutations (Surya Namaskar):** A classic energizing sequence that warms up the whole body.
- **Standing Warrior Block:** Great for building leg strength, stamina, and confidence.
- **Seated Core Warm-Up Block:** Gentle yet effective movements that wake up your centre.
- **Floor-Based Cool Down Block:** Ideal to end your practice feeling relaxed and grounded.
You can practice blocks individually or string a few together for a longer flow. Over time, you’ll develop your own intuitive rhythm—your practice, your way.
Your Practice, Your Progress
Yoga is more than just individual poses—it’s the experience of flowing through movement with breath and intention. Sequences help us tap into that rhythm, giving structure without rigidity. Whether you’re practicing in the studio, at home, or on the road, having a few yoga blocks to call on is like having a pocketful of tools to support your body and soul.
The important thing is to let yourself get lost in the movement—you might be surprised at what you find!
